OPINION: Safety tips for the festive season

The festive season is a time for family, friends and lazy days. It is also a time when we let our guard down – and criminals instinctively capitalise.

For those travelling during December, leaving their homes unguarded, it is imperative to do the following before leaving:

Double check that all windows and doors are locked before you leave.

Do not keep any outside lights on during the day as it may be a sign that no one is home.

If you will be away for a relatively long time, leave keys with a trusted friend or family member.  This is very important if an emergency arises.

Ensure all tools are locked away. Tools are very handy when breaking into a home.

Arrange for someone to check up on your premises every now and then. Do not give them your keys. They need only check for a break-in or attempted break in.

Notify your neighbours of your absence and leave contact details in case of an emergency – your details and those of a trusted friend in the area.

When on the road:

If you feel unsafe pulling over when a police car instructs you to, do not speed off. Instead, put your hazard lights on, signal to the officer to follow you, and driver to the nearest police station. When you arrive, do not get out of your car. Hoot until an officer comes to attend to you.
