New doc on the block

The Netcare Olivedale Hospital has a new addition to their medical experts.

For Dr Makhosonke Maseko (39), the newly appointed specialist at the Netcare Olivedale Hospital, relationships are the most important part of his job.

“It is important to understand your patient,” he said. “By building relationships patients become compliant.”

The Soweto born and bred, head and neck, and ear, nose and throat specialist started his position at the beginning of November. “I did my specialisation in Pretoria, but I had wanted to come back to Johannesburg and when the position opened I jumped at the opportunity.” He completed a masters’ degree in medicine at the University of Pretoria, and did his thesis on paediatric allergies and neck oncology.

Since Maseko can remember he wanted to become a doctor which he describes as a noble profession. “When I wake up I look forward to the day because I know I will be surprised by something. There will be disappointments, but you have to embrace both your success and disappointments.”

To Maseko all occupations make a difference in someone else’s life.
