Police get proactive in the fight against child-related crime

Following an increase in child-related crimes, Honeydew SAPS have taken steps to become more proactive, rather than reactive.

On Thursday 7 November members of Honeydew police station visited Boskop Primary School in Honeydew and Realeboga Pre-School in Zandspruit, and carried out safety talks with the children.

Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said there has been a huge increase in crimes committed against children. “We saw Diepsloot children who were gruesomely murdered. There are some who were also murdered in the East Rand and other parts of the country, this goes to prove that children are becoming targets by criminals.”
Jacobs added that with the school term coming to an end soon, children will be spending more time at home – many of them alone – which makes them more vulnerable to criminals.

In addition to a talk from police, Grade 1 to 3 Boskop primary pupils were treated to a fun presentation by stationery company BIC and Zinto marketing group. The presentation formed part of the duo’s roadshow, which is aimed at promoting confidence and determination. The children enjoyed the motivational activities and dancing with BIC’s brand mascot BIC Boy.

CEO of Zinto Marketing Michelle Combrinck said “Music and dance transcends cultural and language barriers and this enables BIC to teach the important lessons and create brand associations that are synonymous with literacy and education”.

Realeboga pre-school hosted Hlanganani Early Childhood Development (ECD), a joint preschool association. All Hlanganani’s Grade R pupils benefited from the police talk, and all educators said they were grateful for the care show by police for child safety. “It really made our children happy and anything that brings happiness to the children completes us. You can see that the children also learnt something,” said Hlanganani teacher Violet Masila.
