Cosatu cracks down on corruption

Cosatu has called on the police's priority crime investigating unit, the Hawks, to investigate issues of corruption in South Africa.

The trade union issued the Hawks with a memorandum on the fight against corruption, demanding the arrest of all those implicated in corrupt activities surrounding the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the construction of the 2010 World Cup stadiums.

Part of the memorandum states, “The construction companies have openly … confessed to their part and role in the corrupt practices called collusion during the construction of the stadiums and also of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Projects.”

The memorandum was one of many issued during the Gauteng leg of Cosatu’s national day of action against e-tolling, labour brokers and the Youth Wage Subsidy, where the trade union announced that it had opened criminal cases with the Hawks against several construction companies operating in South Africa.

“Evidence of the collusion between these companies is contained in the Competition Commissions Report which the Hawks must demand from the Competitions Commission and start to prosecute without any further delays. We believe that such [action] will send a strong message to both the private and public institutions that our country will not tolerate any form of corruption,” the memorandum stated.

Cosatu has given the Hawks seven days to take action regarding the demands outlined in the trade union’s memorandum.
