Mother of Diepsloot toddler arrested

The mother of the Diepsloot toddler will face murder and child neglect charges.

The mother (23) of the deceased child found eaten by rats – now dubbed the Diepsloot toddler – was arrested in the Randburg CBD on 12 November.

The seven-month-old baby was allegedly left alone over night in a shack and was discovered dead on 10 November.

Police received a tipoff which lead them to a tavern in the CBD. The mother was found in the company of a male friend and arrested. She has been charged with child neglect and murder.

She will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on 13 November.
More arrests are expected as the investigation continues. The results of the postmortem are still outstanding.

Gauteng police communications officer Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said, “The police would like to acknowledge and thank the support from the community and media”.
