New look appeals for iconic mall

Visit the newly renovated Randburg Square.

The newly renovated Randburg Square, in the heart of the Randburg Central Business District (CBD), reopened on 4 October.

The square had undergone a complete redesign of the interior and some external elements of the mall. The R207-million revamp was carried out in three phases. Some of the refurbishments include improved sightlines through the reconfiguration of central areas, the broadening of the internal walkways and the introduction of wider and higher shop fronts. Speaking at the opening ceremony, CEO of Vukile Property Fund Laurence Rapp said the company was proud to have played a part in the restoration of the Randburg CBD.

“The redesign process has enabled us to attract 23 new retail stores to the centre and we now have a top quality tenant mix to cater for the square’s diverse shoppers,” said Rapp.

The shopping centre has been nominated as a finalist in the renovation and expansion of an existing shopping centre category at the 2013 South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Retail Design and Development Awards. Ward 102 councillor David Potter said, “Having made use of the square as a child and seen the degradation of the mall and surrounds, I am very pleased with the upgrade.

The City Council has pledged a large amount of funding to Randburg over the next three financial years and urge those who used to shop at the mall to return and be prepared to be impressed”.

Loyal shoppers Roberta and Schalk Slabbert were at the reopening and could not believe their eyes.

“We have been shopping here for more than 35 years and we are blown away by the way the mall has been transformed.”

The square will also celebrate it’s 35th birthday in November.
