Cash-in-transit guard killed

Robbers escape unscathed with an undisclosed amount of money.

A cash-in-transit heist at Northgate Shopping Centre took a turn for the worse when a guard was fatally shot.

The guard, carrying a money box with an undisclosed amount of cash from Pick n Pay, apparently was making his way back to the security van at about 3.30pm.

Two suspects pulled up in a BMW and a Toyota Yaris. They shot the guard before driving away with the cash.

Officers of Honeydew Police Station rushed to the scene and found the guard dead.

The centre’s manager, Michelle Papastefana said, “We send our condolences to the family of the deceased. Our security will be tightened up at the centre to prevent incidents like these from happening again.”

Shop owner, Moses Indaba said, “I saw the guard yesterday for the last time when he picked up money from my shop. I was shocked to see that he was shot dead this afternoon. He was always friendly and had a smile on his face whenever you would see him.”

Police were still searching for the suspects. Spokesperson of the Honeydew Police Station, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs was unavailable to comment.
