Community is needed

Fifteen residents showed up for the recent Sector 3 meeting.

In response, Brigadier Wayne Sirkhot from the Honeydew Police said fighting crime was a partnership between the community and police.

“It is very important that residents come to sector meetings so that they can see what the police are doing, and if residents have specific needs, they can share it with us. And then at the next meeting they can follow up.”

Sirkhot mentioned that residents in the Honeydew Cluster have great ideas, but nothing can be implemented without everyone working together.

“There are many suburbs within the Honeydew area, and you can imagine how many people enter and leave each day.”

Sector 3’s crime overview revealed that burglaries in residential areas were very high. In May, June and July the most burglaries in the Honeydew Cluster occurred in Sector 3.

Theft out of vehicles was high, and in 80 percent jamming devices were used.

“People should stop leaving their belongings inside their cars. There is a lot of negligence.”

Sirkhot stressed that residents should not trust strangers easily. “In terms of street robberies I found criminals watch everybody and wait for the most vulnerable person. Roads like Hendrik Potgieter are very popular.”

On a positive note the Honeydew Cluster Sector 3 had the lowest number of rape, murder and assault cases.

The next Sector 3 meeting will be held on 9 October at the Strubens Valley library.
