Reprimanded for negligence

Parents who leave their cars unlocked and unattended outside schools are openly creating a haven for criminals.

Not only that, but they are also endangering their children and other pupils.

Linden Neighbourhood Watch’s (LNW) Fareed Hoosen urges parents to lock their cars and windows closed when dropping off or picking up their children.

Hoosen spotted three unlocked cars parked outside Roosevelt Park Pre-primary School unattended on 6 August.

“In one car, a child was left in the backseat, another was unlocked and the windows of the other car were rolled down, with a laptop inside,” said Hoosen. “Why won’t parents listen to us,” he added.

Hoosen has encountered many other schools with similar incidents and says this is a problem the LNW and the police face daily. “How many more cars must be stolen and broken into in this area? What if a criminal steals a car with a child inside,” Hoosen urged.

Hoosen said it frustrated him that parents were this negligent around children and was worried about the implications of such behaviour.

“This situation has the potential of becoming very dangerous, especially if a confrontation erupts between the parents and the criminals, children could be killed,” he said.

Hoosen and the police appeal to parents to collaborate with them in minimising opportunities for criminals.
