According to North Riding resident Gail van Niekerk a dog was knocked over on Malibongwe Drive and remained there for a month  until someone removed it.

Van Niekerk said she was very concerned about the dead dog, but had no knowledge as to who one contacts for removing an animal carcass. “I contacted Linden police who directed me to the SPCA. The SPCA said it was not up to it to remove a dead animal. I then called Pikitup several times and nothing happened. The City of Johannesburg was also not of any help. Enviro-sen did say they would remove the dog, but it would have to be a special call out and would cost me R450,” said Van Niekerk.

North Riding Vet Clinic’s doctor Ari Leonard said people could consult the local vet but should first consider taking the carcass to Enviro-sen for cremation or to the SPCA who will not charge for the service. Randburg SPCA spokesperson Craig Rudman said, “For carcass removals along the road, residents can contact Carcass Removal which is a division of Pikitup or alternatively bring it to the SPCA. If the animal is still alive the best is to contact the SPCA nearest to the animal and staff will attend to the animal in distress.”

Pikitup spokesperson Pansy Jali Oyedele confirmed Pikitup as the entity responsible for the clean-up of any carcass and said she would look into the matter, and will have it sorted out as soon as possible.

Should people come across a dead animal they need to report it immediately. It is important that the caller obtains a reference number for all calls logged with Joburg Connect Call Centre.
