Deserted homes are an eyesore

FERNDALE - Values in area drops due to vacant houses

Vacant houses not only negatively affect the look of a suburb but they also bring down the value of property in the surrounding area.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said, “The Department of Public Works own three properties on the corner of Rocky Street and Long Avenue. These properties have been left in a shocking state and vagrants are moving into these properties, especially during winter.”

Bryanfern Residents Association chairperson Ian Leo said, “We have been busy with these properties for the last 10 years. We contacted Environmental Health representatives from Region B and various ward councillors but nothing seems to help. Residents in Ferndale can not sell their houses due to these properties. The next sensible step to take is to sign a petition and send it to the Minister of Housing,” said Leo.

The head of the MEC’s office at the Department of Infrastructure Development Ruzivo Chigwedere added, “Attention will be given to this matter. Any updates on the situation will be sent to the councillor and Residents Associations involved.”
