Graffiti takes over

BLAIRGOWRIE - Suburb gets tagged

Illegal signs show in various forms from illegal advertisements to graffiti.

Artists targeted street signs and electrical boxes in Blairgowrie. Community Association Chairperson Jed Kemery said, “Illegal advertisers are turning into a big problem because they put up their posters where ever they want to. Residents have been urged to rip off any signs that have been erected on stop signs and robots because it is illegal to put up signs on them.”

He mentioned that there is a difference between graffiti and street art. “The latter lifts up the community while graffiti breaks down a community. A street artist painted the wall next to Pinegowrie Post Office on the corner of Barkston Drive and Willscarlet Road, this made a positive change to the suburb.”

He added that the Association spent R160 000 to beautify various verges around the suburb. “We focused on Conrad Drive because it is the mouthpiece of the suburb. I want to thank Gale Jellie, Ashraf Essack and Carmen Stuart who were involved with the beautification of the suburb.”

Kemery urged residents to be on the lookout for youngsters that go around tagging the area. “I believe that it is not people from outside the suburb but people who live in our area that are spraying their graffiti on our street signs.”
