One dead, three critical, after taxi accident

MONTGOMERY PARK - A male passenger was killed in a minibus accident on Beyers Naude Drive just after 6am on 5 July.

The man, allegedly in his thirties, died on the scene after a mini bus taxi collided with an Audi A3 in the intersection between Preller Road and Beyers Naude Drive in Montgomery Park.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minaar said the driver of the minibus taxi fled after the accident.

It is alleged that the mini bus taxi was coming from the City centre to Cresta and the Audi driver was coming out of Montgomery Park and turning right into Beyers Naude Drive.

Eight injured passengers were taken to the Helen Joseph Hospital. “It is alleged that the taxi driver skipped a red light and bumped the Audi A3, but fortunately the Audi driver was not injured. Metro police has opened a charge of capable homicide against the driver who is still on the run.”

Helen Joseph Hospital spokesperson Lovey Mogape said they had seven patients from the accident, of which four were discharged already. “The remaining three are critical and are still in emergency casualty and have not yet been admitted.”
