GALLERY: Robin Hills Primary comes alive with wonderful book characters

ROBIN HILLS – Books come to life as Robin Hills Primary School children come dressed as their favourite characters

To promote and encourage everybody at Robin Hills Primary School to read more, the school held a Character Day where everybody could dress up as their favourite book characters on 17 March.

Foundation phase teacher Taryn Rigney explained that they wanted to promote the concept of reading for enjoyment.

“Each learner was encouraged to bring a book to school and read to each other during the day. We want the learners to understand that reading is not just for the classroom but they must find the fun in reading because it stimulates creative, innovative and fun ideas,” she said.

Rigney further explained that through reading more books, the children could get better marks and it also enabled them to have a better understanding of what they learned in class.

Aqueel Gany who dressed up as the beast from Beauty and the Beast said that he loved reading as it kept him calm.

“When I read a book I always keep a dictionary close by so that if I come across a word that I don’t recognise, I can look it up, which makes me gain even more knowledge,” he said.

The Grade 7 boy added that his favourite book character was the Wimpy Kid from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and that he spent most of his time at the school library.

Gany said that one day he hoped to become a pilot.
