Nelson Mandela Bridge goes pink

BRAAMFONTEIN – Estée Lauder lights up Mandela Bridge to highlight breast cancer.

In commemoration of Breast Cancer Month, the Nelson Mandela Bridge will remain illuminated in pink, to raise awareness of the illness.

Founded by the Estée Lauder Company’s Evelyn Lauder in 2000, the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign is still alive, still promoting breast health and early detection, and this year, they’ve lit up the Nelson Mandela Bridge in pink to call attention to the cause.

This iconic bridge glowed pink last night as guests at the official launch of the campaign looked on from Braamfontein’s rooftop venue, Randlords.

Loren Dreyer, managing director of Estée Lauder spoke at the event and explained why all were gathered for the evening. “For the past 24 years, this campaign has been a fundamental tool in bringing people together and uniting them to make sure we fight this cause collectively,” he said.

Dreyer further detailed efforts made by the company to encourage breast health, the early detection of breast cancer by giving all employees free mammograms, and raising funds for cancer research through the sale of various products.

The lighting of the bridge would not have been possible without the City of Joburg, as well as Dr Mpho Phalatse, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, who was in attendance at the event to share the City’s efforts to prevent and cure breast cancer. “We drive health promotion initiatives through our health promoters and these are based at both vicinity level as well as in our communities through outreach initiatives,” said Phalatse.

The bridge serves as a reminder to the public to be aware of breast cancer and is just one of many iconic buildings that will be illuminated in pink during October – along with the Sydney Opera House and the Eiffel Tower, to name a few.

“The illumination of the Nelson Mandela Bridge, driven by Estée Lauder companies and the City of Joburg, marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and will remain lit during the month of October,” said host of the event, television personality and businessman, Maps Maponyane.
