Winter sports festival for Grade 6s

RANDPARK RIDGE – Grade 6 pupils got to try their hand at netball, hockey and rugby.

Young pupils got a chance to experience sports for the first time at the Winter Sports Festival at Rand Park High School.

Grade 6 pupils from five surrounding primary schools were invited to the festival on 30 July. Grade 11s from Rand Park High helped organise and run the games for the day.

“We were very pleased with the excellent response received from our local primary schools when we invited their pupils to attend this year’s Winter Sports Festival. The children participated with much enthusiasm and were willing to try their hand at sports they’ve never played before,” said Reynier Coertzen, deputy principal and dean of sport, at Rand Park High School.

Each of the sports enthusiasts got to try out netball, hockey or touch rugby. Some of the pupils had never played any of the sports and it was a great opportunity to test their skills in each of the sports. The players were divided into teams and competed against each other. There were teams such as Lions, Sharks, Stars and Stormers.

Parents and pupils came together to celebrate inter-school camaraderie as well as have fun with the family. A parent, Lara Reeves, said, “The netball girls played so well. It is amazing to see how well they can play when the pressure is off and the players are having fun.”

Coertzen added, “It was a sports festival to be remembered and an excellent opportunity to welcome families in the area to our school.”
