Bob Dylan fans were out in their masses at the Barnyard Theatre Cresta for Bob Dylan’s 75th birthday tribute concert.
“I grew up with Bob Dylan. I sing Forever Young to my pupils at my school’s assembly every year to continue the love of Bob Dylan. It is my favourite song,” said Bob Dylan fan, Else Henry.
Organiser of the show, Danny de Wet, opened the evening on 29 May with his cover of one of Bob Dylan’s songs and then made way for Eddie Carvalho, who was his own one-man band playing the guitar, the harmonica and singing I’ll be your baby tonight and Don’t think twice, it’s alright.
The Mighty Quinn and Clay Tin performed Mr Tambourine Man, which got even that part of the audience who were not too well versed in Bob Dylan, swaying and singing along. However, the trio of Deo Phoenix, Mark Kenyon and Darren Drawbridge also had the crowd singing along to their cover of Damsel, first performed by a South African band, Tribe After Tribe.
After this mostly acoustic set, Jasper Dan and a high school band, Oh! Calamity, took to the stage, leaving audience members far from disappointed with the variety of Dylan’s music from different albums.
De Wet still holds on to the joke that he is the number one Dylan fan and congratulated the artist on making it to 75. The event was streamed live and was recognised on the international Bob Dylan site.
