KYA SAND – The babies and little one's of Thorn Tree Academy have a place to play around in.

ManPower in conjunction with volunteers helped build a playground for young pupils at Thorn Tree Academy.

Thorn Tree Academy is located in Kya Sand and services the children of the Pipeline Informal Settlement and surrounds. Carla-Lee Kamp, CEO of Life Tree NGO (formerly known as Judah Africa NPO) said, “The pupils at the school are the children from our community. We wanted to make a small play area accessible for the little pupils who attend our academy.”

Around 40 people arrived in the early hours of the morning on 26 May, to help create this special space. Local business man Keith Horwood sponsored the grading of the site. Life Tree staff and family members of pupils installed a fence for the playground.

The playground consists of a green caterpillar made of tyres, a zebra as well as hopscotch and a sandpit.

ManPower donated all of the materials, including the gym equipment, fence, grass and a sandpit shipped all the way from Durban. Vesna Taprek said, “We loved what Carla had to tell us when she explained what they do for the community.

“After much discussion we thought the nicest way to make the small children happy is to build and create a safe area for them to play in,” added Taprek.
