GALLERY: Grandparents honoured at Wonderland

FAIRLAND – Wonderland Pre-primary holds its annual grandparents day, where grandparents were celebrated for the contribution they make in their grandchildren’s lives.

Grandparents were celebrated at Wonderland Pre Primary in Fairland on 11 September. Grandparents from far and wide were invited to spend the day with their grandchildren at the school’s annual Grandparents Day.

Owner of the school Mandy Vorweg said that grandparents play a very special role in the lives of their grandchildren and that the school wanted to acknowledge and celebrate them. “It is the school’s tradition to hold the Grandparents Day, we serve them tea with treats and the children have made them key rings,” Vorweg said.

Peggy Roux, a teacher at the school, said that grandparents had a bigger job than before as parents were under a lot of pressure and spent less time at home due to work pressures. “Grandparents often step in to raise their grandchildren when parents can’t or just aren’t able to fulfill their parental duties, so we want to thank the grandparents for a sterling job,” Roux said.

Priscilla Blom who came to spend the day with her grandchildren said grandparents were more important than before because the world is more dangerous than before. “Kids can’t play outside anymore and there are more broken marriages than before, and as grandparents we must be there to love and support our grandchildren in the absence of their parents,” Blom said.

She noted that grandparents had to teach their grandchildren life lessons and manners. Malerato Mothea who also came to spend the day with her grandchild added that it was important for grandparents to play a role in their grandchildren’s lives because they had to grow up with good manners and respect, and often parents are too busy to instill these values in their children.
