GALLERY: A woman’s run

NEWTOWN – Totalsports Women's Race proves to be competitive on Women's Day.

The Totalsports Women’s Race 2015 was held in Newtown on Women’s Day, 9 August. The event started with a fun run before the main 10km run. Lebogang Phalula from Soweto completed the main run in an impressive time of  00:33:22, breaking the previous record. She was followed by Tebogo Mabena with a time of 00:36:34.Chery Lee-Schoeman came third with 00:36:45.

“Big up to myself,” Phalula said. “I knew I was going to win today’s run like I won the Durban one recently.” Phalula and her twin sister Lebo started running at the age of 10.

“We were always on top, if it was not me, it was my twin sister Lebo,” said Phalula, while allowing her sister to stand on the podium with her. Second-placed Mabena said, “I enjoy running and the support we are getting from the community. I am happy I completed the race.”

Third-placed Lee-Schoeman said that her focus is not only to win, but to also do what is best for her body as a woman. She advised other women to take part in sports.

Lebogang Ramela (15) from Kagiso came first in the fun run, followed by Tebogo Matla (16). Third-placed was Thobile Vilakazi (16) from Eden Park. All entrants received a T-shirt, while finisher’s bracelets were given to all runners as they crossed the finish line.

South African hip-hop sensation, Kwesta supported the Women Run This City movement by serenading runners once they crossed the finish line. Jacky Mclean, the event public relations and communications officer said, “Taking place on National Women’s Day, the Totalsports Women’s Race supports PinkDrive, a non-profit company that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering services to women across South Africa.”
