FERNDALE – Year of the Goat brings peace and compassion to Brightwater Commons.

The Chinese New Year was celebrated by South Africa at Brightwater Commons in Ferndale on 1 February.

Brightwater Commons saw hordes of people flock to the centre, wearing their bright variations of red to celebrate the new year.

This year marks the Year of the Goat which symbolises the spacious movement of the Chinese nation.

Hu Zhang Liang, spokesperson for the ambassador of the Republic of China, Tian Xuejun, commented, ”This is a joyful event with friendly local people from all walks of life illustrating their interest in the Chinese culture.”

When asked how relations between South Africa and the Republic of China can be improved Hu responded, ”The foundation of the state

has a great relationship. It is through appreciation and understanding at a high political level that trust is earned. We are happy to know that we have a

mutual sense of trust. The state leaders are in frequent contact which allows for a mediated consensus with both states.”

Ambassador of the Republic of China, Tian Xuejun, marked the eyes of the lion which symbolises good luck and a rite of passage to open the event. He said, ”This marks the year of China within South Africa. It brings me great joy to open this ceremony.”

It was a great turn-out with delicious food and dance of local and international talent.
