Repairs are underway on a major burst at Honeydew Reservoir

Johannesburg Water contractor teams, are working tirelessly to restore water supply at the Honeydew Reservoir

Residents in parts of Randburg continue to suffer from significant water supply disruptions as Johannesburg Water conducts critical repairs at the Honeydew Reservoir.

Planned maintenance at the reservoir was scheduled for October 1, however, a pipe feeding the reservoir burst on September 29 causing damage to some Honeydew roads, homes and businesses.

Joburg Water and contractor teams conducted assessments and determined that the extent of the work required was significant.

Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said, “The contractor worked throughout the night to ensure the repair work is completed. Restoration time of the complete network will be advised after evaluation of the repair. Restoration of the system includes complete repair, testing, charging of lines, removing air from the line, and supplying Olivedale Reservoir.”

Affected areas included Bellairspark, Boskruin, Boundary Park, Bromhof, Bushill Estate, Cosmo City, Honey Park, Honeydew Manor, Hoogland, Huntershill, Kevin Ridge, Kya Sands, Laser Park, Noordhang, North Riding, Northgate, Northwold, Olivedale, Randparkrif, Sharonlea, Radiokop, Sonnedal, Honeydew Ridge, Sundowner, Tres Jolie, Zandspruit, Harveston, Mogale City, and Kim Bult.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp said many people have been without water for days but the water utility had provided an alternative water supply in various locations.

“The replacement of the pipe arrived yesterday (October 1), and we are expecting the repairs to be finished and some places to have water today (October 2). If there are any further leaks, they will decide if they repair immediately or at a later date. There may still be some intermittent water supply this week until things are stabilised.”

He added the Joburg Water teams worked tirelessly throughout the night and were currently busy with welding and joining operation.
Joburg Water confirmed that repairs had been completed, and that some valves had been opened for water to flow. The Olivedale Reservior and pipes and systems will slowly fill up. However it was then discovered that the Honeydew Tower pipe was damaged and was leaking. Joburg Water will advise on the way forward.
