Rand Park High alumna leads donation drive

Rand Park High alumna Kimera Govender partners with local schools to assemble care packages for abused women, emphasizing dignity and empowerment through her ‘A Bag of Resilience’ initiative.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication, Kimera Govender, a proud Rand Park High School alumna, has initiated a remarkable donation drive called ‘A Bag of Resilience’.

A Bachelor of Science (BSc) Environmental Science graduate and now a semi-finalist for Miss Earth South Africa, Govender’s campaign aims to advocate for both environmental and social issues, with an ambitious plan to expand this initiative into a broader development program.

Launched in celebration of Women’s Month, ‘A Bag of Resilience’ seeks to collect used handbags and essential personal care items such as sanitary pads, tissues, soaps, deodorants, toothpaste, and hair accessories.

The Rand Park High School team of learners and staff packed the bags of resilience.

These items are then assembled into handbag care packages for women across South Africa who have endured domestic violence, abuse, and discrimination. Govender’s initiative not only provides these women with practical support but also aims to restore their dignity and sense of empowerment.

The project has garnered significant support from various local schools and individuals. Govender partnered with staff and learners at Rand Park High School, learners at Birchleigh High School, staff at Springs Secondary School, and other generous supporters.

Through their combined efforts, they received cash and product donations, which enabled them to fill 121 handbags with personal care items. Additionally, 56 smaller gift bags were prepared for distribution. These bags and packages are destined for facilities and centres in the greater Johannesburg area which support victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, abuse, and discrimination.

In honour of Women’s Month, the handbags will be donated to a women’s centre. The initiative, which launched on July 1, received additional sponsorship from the local company, Newsclip. Govender expressed her gratitude. “I firmly believe in the transformative power of change. It starts with small steps, and when combined, these steps can lead to monumental differences. My mission is to inspire and encourage others to take their own steps toward positive change, whether it’s through environmental actions or social support. Together, we can make a significant impact on our world and the lives of those around us.”

Alan Wilke, the principal of Rand Park High School, praised the initiative, stating, “We are pleased to support Kimera with this outstanding community outreach initiative and thank our learners and staff for the help they have provided and their donations.”
