Ferndale on Republic partners with 67 Blankets to celebrate Mandela’s birthday

Velly Matsebatlela explained that the attendance was good, “people came in big numbers from mall Employees to Ordinary shoppers were excited to be part of the event.”

In celebration of Mandela Day, Ferndale on Republic partnered with 67 Blankets. From July 16 to 18, the community joined for a heartwarming, eco-friendly crafting initiative.

Over the course of these three days, the shopping centre transformed into a vibrant hub of activity, as the Knitwits came together to knit and crochet squares that would form beautiful blankets. These blankets will be donated to those in need, spreading warmth and compassion throughout the community.

Whether you’re an experienced crafter or a beginner, everyone was welcome to contribute a square.

They were donated to various places such as Vuka Uzenzele Old Age Home, Reshomile Primary School, Sparrow HIV and Orphanage Centre, Rays of Hope in Alexander, and San Salvador in Hyde Park.

Velly Matsebatlela, ambassador for 67 Blankets, explained that the initiative is not only a wonderful way to give back but also an opportunity to engage in an environmentally friendly activity.

“By knitting together, we not only create warmth for others but also foster a sense of community and shared purpose. We visited various shopping malls in the country, promoting the idea of encouraging people to learn how to knit/crotchet blankets for distribution to the needy people.”

She added that the day was a success, and they achieved all their objectives. “The purpose of the event was to celebrate Mandela’s birthday and also to inform the general public about 67 Blankets. We also wanted to teach young and old how to knit/crotchet and to remind them about the good things that Former President Mandela did [for] humanity.

“It was a fruitful day for all participants. As a member of 67 Blankets and a Knitwit, this day meant a lot to me. It has made an indelible mark in my mind for many years to come.”
