Hoërskoool Randburg’s rising equestrian star

Ashley Novello said her ultimate dream is to compete internationally in the Longines FEI global tour and her goal is to become a versatile equestrian, performing in many disciplines, and be able to jump on any given horse.

Equestrian Ashley Novello recently participated in the South African Nation Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) and was in first place in the 1m showjumping speed class.

The Linden-based young rider was also in fourth place in the 1m showjumping competition round and in fifth place in equitation.
Ashley started racing when she was eight years old.

She explained that she believes every equestrian goes through a stage in their lives where fear becomes real. But working through fear makes her a stronger equestrian than she was yesterday.

“I was barely eight years old when I competed in my first-yard show in Honeydew. I was riding a school pony called Hercules. He was a super-intelligent schoolmaster, and I just needed to hold the reigns and point him in the correct direction. Since I started jumping in the higher grades with Landsi, I realised that perfect practice makes perfect riding. It’s a whole different ballgame to compete with a warmblood, and my technique and horsemanship had to improve to stay on top.”

There are many reasons why horse riding is her passion, but she shared the following as her top five reasons:

  • The thrilling rush of adrenaline
  • The connection one has with this amazing animal
  • Being outdoors
  • Socialising with other horse lovers
  • Riding is her happy place and is fun.

Preparing for the Sanesa she explained that a week before a show, her coach, Carl Boonzaaier, concentrates on technique, especially straightness, balance, and rhythm.

“Nothing worthwhile comes easy. Mental and physical preparation is so important. The night before a show, I clean my horse’s tack, pack my show box and choose my uniform, while listening to my favourite music. I start my show day with positive thoughts and good vibes.”

Ashley is the proud owner of Claudius and Zorino Landsturm. “Claudius is a fast, bay thoroughbred with a heart of gold, my teddy bear. Landsi is a young, quirky Namibian warmblood with incredible stride and scope. I love his willingness to please in the ring.”

The Bob Charter arena at Kyalami Equestrian Park is one of her best competitions and that where her idols often compete.

“The ‘Bob’ is big. It’s where champions are made and it’s every young equestrian’s dream to compete in a world-class arena. Coach Boonzaaier is my ultimate idol. Followed by international showjumpers such as Elizabeth (Beezie) Madden of the USA, Henrik von Eckermann of Sweden, and Ben Maher of Great Britain.”

She added that the sport teaches her something new every day, to be patient, to trust, to be tough as nails, and that horses are better listeners than jumpers.
