Ferndale Shotokan Karate Dojo dominates karate competition

Sensei Luenga explained that in terms of competing they are open to invitation from all federations as they are under Japanese Karate Association Federation.

Under the guidance and training of Sensei Alex Sylvain Luenga, the Ferndale Shotokan Karate Dojo impressed at the recent Pan African Shotokan Karate-Do Federation (PSFK) National Children’s Championship that was held at Kwa-Thema.

The students participated in Kata (technique) and Kumite (fighting) raking in the medals for the dojo. They won 14 medals in total with five gold, five silver and four bronze.

Luenga, explained that this is in part, to help kids learn discipline and keep them off bullying from school and away from substance abuse.

“With just two years’ of training I have seen their results; some of them started and in five months got a gold in fighting – they are just amazing. I am very proud of this achievement to see the way they take the training seriously with their listening skills – they deserve it. This ensures us that they can defend themselves at all times.”

The dojo mainly trains children from the age of four and young adults from the surrounding areas of Randburg like Ferndale, Linden, and Windsor.

Kelsy Munesu of Ferndale Shotokan Karate Dojo takes the first spot in the podium.

Brown belt Britney Meyers said, “I am truly honoured to have achieved the ranking of a brown belt under Sensei Luenga, even though it hasn’t been an easy task throughout the past few years since 2018.”

The dojo currently has two days of training on Saturday and Sunday. As it serves low-income students, they are constantly looking for sponsors. “We are battling with a lack of training material and transportation when having to travel for our championships and competitions.
“We would highly appreciate it if we could be sponsored with some training gear and anything else to keep the school going.”
