Randburg Bowls Club development project yields good results

Wanda Melane has been chosen to be part of the Bowls South Africa Green team and will attend a training camp in July.

Boskruin-based Randburg Bowls Club is celebrating more success with its established junior development programme.

Approximately nine years ago, under the dedicated guidance of Terry Turner and with the Randburg Bowls Club supporting her efforts, the Soweto Development Project was born. Its vision was to take bowls into Soweto, involve the youth in a healthy activity, and allow a lot of juniors to develop their skills in the game of bowls.

The project has gone from strength to strength with a playing surface being built at the Enos Mafokate Equestrian Centre and attracting as many as 60 juniors playing bowls after school.

This effort put in by Tuner and her team of volunteers is culminating in a lot of talent emerging with as many as 11 of the players being chosen to represent the province over the years. Four of the players are currently in Bloemfontein representing at the junior inter-provincials.

The dedication and effort have paid more dividends in that for the second year in a row, Wanda Melane has been selected for the Bowls South Africa Green Squad to attend a training camp in the Drakensberg in July.

The Green Squad is made up of talented players who have been identified from around the country. The more talented bowlers will be identified and be invited to the Bowls South Africa Gold Squad, from which the Proteas National Squad is selected.

An ecstatic Melane, said. “I cannot wait for this camp, and will continue to work on my game and continue improving.”

Turner explained that she is extremely proud of all of her players and that the talent will continue to grow. “Watch this space for more inclusion in the various squads.”
