Velocity dominates end of season tournament
Velocity coach says that the turnout was good, especially for a last-minute tournament.
Velocity Football Academy showed pure dominance in the end-of-the-year tournament that was played at Ferndale High School.
The tournament featured the U13, 15 and 17. Ten teams participated in all the age groups. The tournament used a points system with the two teams with the most points going head-to-head in the finals. The U13 and U15s had three teams each in the group and four in the U17 group.
The visiting teams included Old Parks, Top Class Football, Northern Blues, and Evo.
Organiser and Velocity coach Aidan de Smidt explained that the tournament was started to celebrate the end of the season and they only invite a few teams in the area to participate.
“We also had three trophies for each age group champions and other trophies for best players – determined after every game by coaches and then the tournament’s top goal scorer trophy.”
Teams displayed some good football and great fighting spirit as a lot of the games ended with one goal.
The U13s battle was between Evo and Velocity. Evo won in the group stages match, but they faced each other in the final and the hosts took it 1-0. The U15s again Velocity against Evo with Evo taking it home with a narrow 1-0 victory.
For the U17 division, the home side dominated in their group winning all three games and playing exceptionally well. They faced Old Parks in the finals who tested the home side but fell short with 2-1 at the end.
Smidt added that the preparations for the tournament were exhausting. “I’m lucky to have staff that were such a help and owe them a thanks because without them it wouldn’t have been a success. We are going to host another tournament next year at the end of February.”
