Local NPOs assist matriculants before exams

Nhlanhla Nkosi said that they have noticed that some schools are struggling and facing a lot of issues and they will help where they can to improve the school next year

Popularly known for organising successful sports Kasi games, Zandspruit-based Sdew Kasi Lethu Games organisation shifted their focus to supporting 2023 matriculants a week before their finals.

They teamed up with Education and Youth Empowerment NPO to engage in school drives to some of the local high schools. Guests were motivating the matriculants and encouraged them to believe in themselves as well as giving them study guides and providing them with the most important exam equipment, such as pens, pencils and rulers.

The schools that were visited include Blue Eagles, Far North Secondary School, Kwena Molapo and Matla Combined School.

Nhlanhla Nkosi of Sdew explained that they were inspired by anxiety and pressure that was felt by 2023 matriculants. “While we were engaging individuals for their readiness towards final exams, we wanted to demonstrate that it takes basic materials and simple words of encouragement to change the narrative.”

Some of the programmes that were held include:

  • Mentorship
  • Career guidance
  • Coaching
  • Tertiary implications
  • Students debates
  • Conducive learning environment
  • Agricultural (nutritional education).

He added that they had positive responses, where students participated by engaging with them and the speakers; it showed that they regained their confidence.

“Most learners had low self-esteem. We are also planning to make this project annually but we feel they are ready. They were engaging with us, responding to other questions that were posed to them.

“We send them an intensive message of good luck, not only to these four schools but to all the Class of 2023 matriculants. We say go and make education fashionable, and know that this is the only weapon to change lives.”
