Police investigate case of negligent driving after officers die in crash
The officers died in a truck accident on Doreen Road in Roodepoort, and have been paid tribute by the Honeydew CPF.
The Honeydew Police Station and Community Policing Forum have paid tribute to two police officers who died in a car accident.
The warrant officer and sergeant died in a fatal truck accident on the corner of Doreen and Totius Road in Roodepoort on September 20. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili explained that another sergeant, an administration clerk and a secretary were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident – around 13:00.
“The members were driving to a fitness centre when their car was hit in a multi-vehicle collision,” she said.
“It is alleged that a 1-tonne truck lost control and bumped into three vehicles, including the state vehicle. The members were seriously injured and they were rushed by ambulance to various hospitals for medical treatment.”
All officers hail from Honeydew Police Station.
Muridili said station commander Brigadier Anesh Maharaj sent out messages of condolences to the family members, and wished the injured a speedy recovery. “Maharaj has directed the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness to provide the family of the deceased and injured members with psychosocial support through this difficult time.”
The CPF has also shared its condolences. “We would like to send our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officers at Honeydew SAPS,” said the forum’s public relations officer, Michael Steyn. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone.”
The forum also gave its condolences to family, friends and fellow police members through a post on Facebook. “No one can ever prepare us for the loss of a loved one. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in this time,” the post stated.
