Players say what they enjoy about doubles tournament at Randburg Squash Club

In addition to the three-division tournament, the club also host social doubles every week.

Randburg Squash Club is busy with an exciting doubles league featuring assorted divisions including the men’s section, blue section and red section.

While the men’s is self-explanatory, the red and blue sections are mostly mixed teams, meaning a woman and man team up.

There are also no more than two women-only parings competing in these divisions.

ā€œI love playing doubles on a Monday evening,ā€ smiled Tyran Rylance. ā€œIt’s a great way to unwind after work and being able to do this with great company and squash is a bonus.ā€

His teammate Francis Sherwell said the sport was active, energetic, and all-round great fun. ā€œNot only is it one of the few sports you can take your frustrations out on a little ball, but it is also one of the most incredibly fast-paced and exciting sports,ā€ he added.

Mike Bester and Lisa Bruwer enjoy the doubles tournament.

Sherwell said most people played singles squash, but doubles was very different. ā€œDoubles is careful, skillful playing and relies on teamwork and coordination with your partner. Itā€™s a unique blend of quick thinking, strategy, camaraderie, and physical activity. Thereā€™s immense enjoyment that comes from the teamwork and the tactics, and there’s nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry against our opponents that keeps me hooked.ā€

The format is also more sociable and yet somehow still competitive.

Lisa Bruwer said she was competing because she wanted to increase her fitness and improve her game. ā€œWhat stands out for me is the positive impact playing in this tournament has on my work-life balance,ā€ she said.

Mike Bester said it was about having fun and enjoying the sport he loves in a friendly environment while meeting new people.

Malcolm Meintjes agreed the pace of doubles was quick but it was lightened up with sharp banter between players. ā€œIn this particular tournament, Iā€™ve been fortunate enough to be plugged in with the hotshots, so am very excited about getting exposure to the top seeds as thereā€™s so much to learn from them,ā€ he said. ā€œLong live squash.ā€

The club thanked Richard King for ensuring all the scores and scheduling were done on time, and for keeping the club’s website updated.

The club also has social doubles at 09:00 on Saturday mornings and the community is welcome to try out the sport.
