Former Randburg FC defender enjoys Dstv premiership football

The preliminary squad will still be trimmed from 36 to 23 players when Broos announces his final list for the two matches.

From playing in the Gauteng Development League (GDL) with Randburg Football Club almost a year ago, Eme Okon has found himself part of Bafana 36-man preliminary squad.

The 18-year-old defender took a big jump in his football career. He spent one season with the Super Sport United Diski Challenge team before first team coach Gavin Hunt gave him a debut this season.

He already featured in three games alongside veteran centre-back Thulani Hlatshwayo. That was enough for Bafana coach Hugo Broos to select him in his preliminary squad that will face Namibia and DR Congo in September.

The sensational teenager was recently praised by Hunt, saying he is their best player this season by far.

“Well, our best player has been Emi for the last three games. He’s our best by far. He came from Randburg U18 last season, he played Diski and we looked at him but it wasn’t the right time. However, I knew then he would play for the first team soon. In preseason he was magnificent.”

Speaking to SABC Sports Randburg chairman Kevin Mudie described Okon as an outstanding humble young man. “He deserves the success he got and that coming in the future. He has a very bright future ahead of him. We are hoping that one day he will go to Europe.”

He added that they are very proud and it is a special moment for them and his family.

“We understand it is a prelim call but his name we are going to hear more in future. He is a fantastic player and we are very proud.”

Mudie also believed that Okon would one day go play in Europe.
