St Stithians College hockey wins unique sporting double

For the first time since 1975, the Boys College took home the Aitken Cup, and the Girls College won the Pullen Cup for the second time since formed

St Stithians College hockey completed a double as the Girls’ College first team won the Pullen Cup tournament, following in the footsteps of their brothers from the Boys’ College, who won the Aitken Cup in May.

It is the first time that one school has won both titles in the same year. The girls’ team went into the Pullen tournament with a great season behind them.

Girls and boys St Stithians hockey teams that achieved impressive victories.

They were unbeaten in the local interschool league and had recorded wins against some of the top schools in the country, at the St Mary’s Festival and at the other tournaments that they played in. They boasted a record number of representatives in the provincial teams and Reabetswe Phume was selected for the South African Schools U18A team.

The boys’ team, apart from their success at the Aitken tournament, played 19 games and won 17 of them. In the process, they scored 69 goals and only conceded 15. It was a record year for them as far as provincial selections were concerned.

The team’s captain, Taine Tanner-Ellis, was chosen for South African Schools U18A, and Aiden Blatch was chosen for the U16A, which was the icing on the cake.

School’s communications manager Annie Fyfe-Hitchings explained that both wins were a massive display of commitment and determination by the hockey teams.

“There are many players (in both the boys’ and girls’ teams) who are still at Saints next year to indicate that the future is bright for our hockey division.”
