Bryanston judoka to represent their country

Hajime Judo Academy members win medals at nationals and look forward to winning more at the international tournament in August.

Local judo stars recently shone at nationals and are looking forward to the Commonwealth Judo Championships in August.

Bryanston-based Hajime Judo Academy saw its members win eight medals in individual events at the National Judo Championships in Gqeberha in July, and a further handful in team categories.

The Commonwealths will also be held in Gqeberha and Hajime will be sending 16 judoka to compete.

Back: Paul Nothnagel (owner of Hajime Judo Academy), Michael Botes and Jean Pitout. Middle: David Stockigt, Shibli Soofie, Jayden Thiel and Jocelyn Botes. Front: Evan Thiel, Matthieu Havenga and Sébastien Havenga.

“I hope to bring home a medal of any sort as no matter the outcome, the experience is what I’m there for,” said 16-year-old Llewelyn Jones. The more experienced Jean Pitout will compete in the masters’ division. He said he would love to win a medal and test himself against international judoka.

Jocelyn Botes (16) said, “This will be my first time participating as it was cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2020. I want to fight people from different parts of the world, learn from them and their techniques and see if I can adapt it all to my fighting style.”

Academy owner Paul Nothnagel said he was proud of all his students who were selected to represent their country. However, each judoka needs to pay R10 000 for accommodation, food and travel expenses.

The community can find out more about contributing towards the group by contacting Alethea Botes on 083 252 8080 and Paul Nothnagel on 082 920 2454.
