Honeydew CPF freshens up police station to celebrate Mandela Day

The refurbishment project is part of an ongoing effort to create a space that is welcoming for the public and comfortable for officers.

Defending the community from harm and danger requires an environment that inspires.

Members of the Honeydew Community Police Forum transformed the working space of the protectors of the peace on July 16. Joined by members of the public and Honeydew police officers, the project was their contribution to the Mandela Day celebrations. Going far beyond the 67 minutes, the crew sanded, ground, scraped and painted the Customer Service Centre (CSC) of Honeydew police station well into the late afternoon.

The station building had become somewhat neglected and the Honeydew CPF have long been wanting to create a more friendly space to welcome the public. The beautification project had begun several weeks earlier when a tidy garden was created on the grass patch outside the building. As well as a fresh lick of paint, members swapped out old lights with bright energy-saving LEDs and are in the process of sourcing materials to upgrade the flooring.

Dwayne Reinecke from Universal Paints is happy to donate the paint and supplies to Honeydew CPF’s Jon Rosenberg.

Hamilton’s Brushware donated more than R5 000 worth of brushes, rollers and drip trays, Paint Trade Hillfox donated paints and materials while Fast Fix sponsored additional hands and tools. Universal Paints Allen’s Nek and Randpark Ridge supplied 120 litres of paint which now covers the smooth walls of the station. “If we see a way to improve the community, we are happy to get involved. I feel this can help instill a sense of pride in the station,” said Dwayne Reinecke from Universal Paints.

No celebration or day of hard work would be complete without a braai so boerewors rolls were made as a reward. Hoping the facelift lifts the spirits, Honeydew CPF PRO Michael Steyn said, “This is part of the upliftment project we have started and will continue with it. All we can say is what an awesome day and a massive change to the CSC. We managed to paint most of the centre but the time did catch up to us. Thank you to everyone who came out to assist. It was great to see people get together and do something different.”
