Hoërskool Randburg wins Linden derby, makes Lions finals

Randburg has not lost the derby against Linden since 2018.

Hoërskool Randburg is riding a wave of success in their rugby, having won all five matches in their annual derby against Hoërskool Linden and also playing and reaching the finals in some of the biggest tournaments in the country.

Randburg has beaten Linden in the derby 1st team matches every year since 2018. This year they also won the 2nd, U16, U15 and U14 team games – and some by enormous margins – even though they were played at Linden this time.

Head girl Shani Janse van Rensburg speaks at the derby.

“Last year, we lost one or two games but this year we won them all,” said deputy principal and head of rugby Francois Vosloo. “We won them in good spirit which was good for both schools.”

1st team captain Anton van Tonder thanks the crowd for their support during the derby.

Randburg’s teams also had good showings in the Golden Lions League. The U14A, U15A, U16A and 1st teams are through to the finals in Alberton on July 22. This has also qualified them for the Noordvaal knockout competition which features some of the best schools in the old Transvaal and north of it.

Hoërskool Randburg rugby players receive great support on the day of the derby.

This will be played from late July with the finals on August 19.

Gerhard Moller, Tiffany Rix and Rolandi Grobler support Hoërskool Randburg.

“Then the season will be pretty much over though there will be a sevens tournament for some of our boys to compete in. Whatever happens in these last two tournaments, it has been a great season and I am proud of how the boys played.”

Henro Steyn, Lukas van den Heever and captain Anton van Tonder celebrate the win.
