Curro Aurora sends cheerleading teams to SA and African Champs

Coaches, teachers and parents send young cheerleaders off to compete in Durban.

Curro Aurora bestowed its cheerleading teams with new kits and proudly sent them off with good wishes to the nationals and the African Championships in Durban.

The South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association nationals will see cheerleaders from across the country compete at Queensmead Hockey Stadium on July 7 and 8.

Curro Aurora won both the primary school all-girls and co-ed divisions last year and hopes to defend their titles as well as win both those categories at the high school level – where they never finished below second in previous years.

Straight after nationals, the African championships will be held at the same venue, and Curro Aurora will be proud to compete against the continent’s best.

“Not many schools are sending both primary and school squads so it is a testament to how great the kids are,” said coach Steve Krause, who met with coaches, teachers and parents to mark the occasion. “At the high school level, Curro Aurora has seven Proteas in its ranks.”

The school’s executive head Joanne Quick told the learners she was proud of them but they should also recognise the role their coaches and parents played in helping them reach these heights.

“I was one of those people who didn’t use to think cheerleading was a proper sport, but my daughter and all of you showed me how wrong I was,” she said. “Cheerleading teaches you to focus and that you are part of a team. You must have such trust in your teammates to catch you.”

Quick told the learners they demonstrated great joy and love for each other in their sport, and if there was one thing they got out of the tournament, it was to have fun, because she already knew they would do well.
