Randburg Clinic School donates water to Hammanskraal
Special needs children donate water bottles to community battling cholera.
A whopping 300 bottles of water with their own artwork and personalised messages of love and solidarity will be donated to families in Hammanskraal battling the cholera outbreak.
The donation of 5l bottles (totalling 1 500l of water) is made all the more significant because it comes from special needs learners at Randburg Clinic School, and their support community.
“Often people think these children are only given things but here we are showing they can also give,” explained Principal Ronald Batchelor. “We had Autism month in April and there is a lot of awareness and acceptance that still needs to take place. This also helps us all realise there are always people less fortunate than us.”
Teacher’s assistant Anita Molebatsi came up with the idea because the school commemorates each public holiday in a different way, and she saw Hammanskraal needed clean water when she was considering what to do for Youth Day.
“Not all the children are capable of speaking, but the pictures and short messages are how they are communicating love to those in need,” she said.
While school parents and friends donated many bottles, contributions were also made by the UDM, the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans, the LK Mobile Kitchen, Tourvest and other individuals and businesses. The water will be taken to Hammanskraal and distributed by Gift of the Givers.
Situated in Ferndale, Randburg Clinic School caters for special needs learners with Autism, as well as severe behavioural disorders.
