Seren House Cottage School turns 5 years old

Local school looks back on how it has grown class by class for the last five years.

Seren House Cottage School recently celebrated its fifth birthday with smiles, tales of achievement and a scrumptious cake.

The school in Malanshof was ‘born’ on Freedom Day, 2018, and opened its doors in Silver Pine Avenue in 2019 to 35 children across
grades 1–9.

With 27 years in education, founder and principal Dr Eirwen Oswald was saddened by the number of children who slip through the cracks of the system. She envisioned a place that looked to the Finnish model of schooling with small classes, no homework for younger grades and excellence in teaching.

Over the last five years, Oswald has built Seren House class by class, with the first group of Grade 12s matriculating last year. The school is GDE and IEB registered.

“We have been blessed with incredible children, incredible parents and incredible staff. Our Seren family continues to grow for which we are not only humbled but incredibly grateful,” Oswald said.

“Over the past five years, Seren House has experienced many wins, including being placed in the top 20 schools participating in last year’s Conquesta Maths Olympiad, with the Grade 6 and 7 classes being placed first in the country,”

Last year, Seren House staged two drama productions: The Jungle Book and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. “More important are the wins that come in the classroom – students, who through individual attention and a different approach to learning, come into their own, their unique talents recognised.”
