Matriculants benefits from the career expo

The career expo exposed learners to a variety of courses institutions offer and gave them an opportunity to ask all their questions.

Over 100 matriculants attended the career expo that was hosted by Randburg Library at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.

Learners gained more knowledge about what institutions of higher learning have to offer. A number of institutions exhibited at the expo, including Wits University, the University of Johannesburg, Boston, Unisa, Varsity College, Vega, City Varsity, and an aviation school.

The event was geared to provide matriculants with a better understanding of the different institutions and financial aid options available so that they could make an informed career choice. Institutions also provided matriculants with pamphlets and prospectuses to equip them with application and admission knowledge.

Vuleka SSB student Reabetswe Lenkokile, said she walked away with more knowledge after attending the expo.

Students make use of the opportunity offered at the career expo.

“This expo enlightened me about applications for next year and the admissions process, as well as about what the different universities are looking for.”

In addition to gaining new knowledge, she was pleased that the institutions answered all her questions. Lenkokile is one of the top achievers at her school and wishes to study medicine or astrophysics after school.

Teacher at Vuleka SSB Smoty Litheko said many matriculants do not have access to the information shared at the expo, which makes the career expo so important.

“This gives learners an opportunity to be in direct contact and conversation with institutions. It is also a time for them to reflect on their futures and where they are going. It creates an opportunity to establish what they need to do now to realise their ambitions.”

Senior librarian Matete Lesele said the highlight was the turnout of matriculants and institutions. “We’re trying to give the learners information so that as they go and write their June exams, they will have a better understanding of the requirements for university applications.”
