Young athlete enjoys parkour sports freedom

Young parkour practitioner shares his love and journey for the slowly growing parkour sport in South Africa.

Robert Endrody writes:

I joined the Concrete Foundation Crew parkour group about two years ago at George Lea Park. Since I was a young boy, I liked active and adrenaline sports. When I first saw a video of parkour, I was already hooked. I really enjoy parkour as a sport because it gives me the freedom to do it anywhere and anytime.

The parkour community is amazing; I am glad to be a part of it. Parkour is a high-risk sport but it also offers rewards such as agility, confidence and better observation skills. To make sure that we are safe or minimise injuries, we prepare for difficult jumps for weeks.

I haven’t had any serious injuries from parkour but broke a bone in my foot, doing a gap jump from one roof to another. As a young athlete, I just wanted to do all the big flips but over time I learnt to do small jumps and flow to not put too much strain and danger on my body.

Parkour is easy to learn and can benefit both body and mind (and it looks cool). I do hope that the sport will grow in South Africa.
