Member of a minority political party Al Jama-ah, Thapelo Amad has resigned as mayor of Johannesburg.
The announcement was made during a media briefing held by several political parties on April 24.
Amad’s resignation comes a day before he was expected to face a motion of no confidence against him during a special council meeting on April 25. The meeting has since been postponed.

The speaker of the council, Councillor Colleen Makhubele has confirmed that the new Executive Mayor will be elected during the extra-ordinary council meeting scheduled for May 2.
