Teenager expresses herself through singing

Randburg singer wants to collaborate with well-known musicians.

Meet Usiphile Gama:

I am18 years old and I was born in Cape Town but now live in Randburg. I am a Grade 12 learner at Concord College Randburg and I’m deeply in love with singing.

I’m a loud, bubbly person who prefers being alone and enjoying my own company. I’m an ambivert. I am a family-oriented individual who would sacrifice anything for the ones I care about and I like making people next to me happy.

I started to take music seriously when I was in Grade 5 at Willows Montessori Primary School and I enjoyed playing the keyboard and guitar.

Disney movies had a huge impact on how I became interested in music and they continue to have a big impact on my musical preferences. Disney songs are usually the ones I sing when I suddenly start singing.

Billie Eilish, an American singer and songwriter, is an inspiration to me. I enjoy how her music soothes me and it would be an incredible experience to work with her one day.

Moreover, Zendaya, who is an actress but has also released a few songs, has a voice that I find to be amazing and incredible. I’m interested in working with her. She is also a major source of inspiration for me.

If I were to perform for a famous person, it would be Jimmy Fallon and Zendaya without hesitation. I would love them to hear my voice and tell me what they think of my voice. That would definitely make my heart skip a beat.

I would like to see myself as a member of the praise and worship team at Rhema Youth, which is the church that I attend.
Besides singing, in my spare time, I like to draw, read, and watch movies. Even though I haven’t started recording my own music yet, one day in the future I will do so.
