Robber targeting Bordeaux Spruit cyclists receives 10 years’ jail time

Randburg Police Station commander commends the work of the police after a suspect was sentenced to 10 years' jail time for armed robbery.

An armed robber who targeted cyclists in the Bordeaux Spruit, was sentenced to 10 years jail time by Randburg Magistrate’s Court.

Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja explained the conviction for armed robbery came after it was alleged that at 08:00 one morning in December 2019, two victims were riding their bicycles when they were approached by two suspects – one being Lebohang Skopo.

“They were forced to stop their journey when the suspects threatened them with [a] firearm and a knife to hand over their belongings,” Maja said.

“One of the victims managed to shoot one suspect who was later arrested and [the] robbed items [were] recovered, which included the firearm used to threaten the victims.”

The matter was assigned to Detective Sergeant Michael Makhopa who collected all the evidence and tied the dots to build the case.

Skopo was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of robbery or any of its competent verdicts committed during the period of suspension. He was further declared unfit to possess any firearm.

Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones commended the sterling work done by the officers from the preliminary investigation to the finalisation of the matter, including work by the prosecuting authority.

“The sentence would serve as a deterrent to those who would be thinking of committing a crime,” Maja added.
