Gauteng Challenge brings bowls to the youth at Randburg Bowls Club
Randburg Bowls Club sees younger bowlers take to the greens for weekend tournament.
The best young bowlers from across the province descended on Randburg Bowls Club for a weekend of competitive but fun matches.
The Gauteng Challenge saw 23 teams of four players each, plus reserves, hit the greens in Boskruin to compete in U15, U18 and U25 divisions for their districts.
The local district is Johannesburg Bowls Club but teams also represented five other districts in the provincial tournament.
Many of the players were much younger than their categories and one or two children were as young as six years old.
“The quality of bowls has been excellent and the turnout bodes well for the future of our sport,” said the club’s men’s team captain Dave Naughton.
“This is crucial for the future of the sport and we are seeing so many very young players compete. The camaraderie and sportsmanship have been amazing to see. Everyone cheers on each other and they are having a great time even in this immense heat.”
Naughton also lauded the commitment of parents and team managers who transported the youngsters across the province and spent the weekend supporting the youngsters.
“For these guys [youngsters], it takes more than it does to put forward an adult team. You have to work out who will transport them and help them on the day should they need anything.”
