Randburg Art Society member loves to paint landscapes with acrylics
A good painter must have a good eye, says local artist at the Randburg Art Society.
Local artist John Kelly is all about landscapes, ships and generally anything beautiful.
The Randburg Art Society member has always sketched, drawing ships as he grew up in Gqeberha.
But he started painting regularly when he retired and joined the society.
Kelly primarily does acrylics as he calls it more ‘forgiving’ than oil pointing.
“When I make a mistake or change my mind I can just paint over,” he said.
“It is an easier medium but it also has a sharpness to it that I like.”
Kelly was showing two of his landscapes at a recent art society meeting – one of Dingle Harbour in Ireland complete with sandy shores, high coastlines and wandering cows, while the other depicts the arid, dry and hot Waterberg area in Limpopo, featuring bushes, a dirt road and a thatch-roofed home.
When asked what makes a great artist, Kelly said a painter had to have a good eye.
“People who draw have a good eye for something aesthetically pleasing. And they are good with perspective.”
The society is now back at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre after the centre was closed for an extended period after a botched maintenance contract in 2021 and much of 2022.
The group meets every Monday morning to share ideas and work on art among other like-minded people.
