Delta Park hosts another successful parkrun in 2023

Delta parkrun event director Nicoline De Kock said that they hope to see a lot of first timers and some old familiar faces in the coming weeks.

Runners and walkers were in good spirits in the second Delta parkrun event of 2023 at Delta Park in Randburg.

Event director Nicoline de Kock said 615 people of all ages took part in the event. “Although the park was a bit muddy due to the rain last week, we had a very successful event with nice sunny weather,” she said.

She added that normally in the last two weeks of January, the number of participants increased because schools had opened again and people wanted to get back in shape after the Christmas holidays.

One of the participants Leigh Harrison celebrated her 100th Delta parkrun. “It’s taken me a long time but eventually I’ve done my 100. I’ve loved every minute of being here at Delta parkrun.”

“It is a great achievement. I know many people have done more over a short period. I love being out and it is good to have that persistence that gets you to your 100th event,” said Harrison.

De Kock said parkrun was not just for runners. “We encourage people from the community to come to walk with the whole family from granny right through to the toddlers who can also be registered from age four. If any member of the family isn’t strong enough to walk the 5 km, we will gladly welcome him or her to our volunteer group. Our volunteers are a very friendly, a jolly bunch, and the best part is you don’t need special skills, just a friendly smile.”

She added that they welcomed one dog per person provided that the animal was well-socialised and on a short leash at all times.

“Scholars and students are very welcome to volunteer for their community hours. We allocate two hours per Saturday. They can check out our webpage for details on how to get involved.”
