Runners wear red at parkrun for event ambassador who passed away

Runs are dedicated to parkrun event ambassador who passed away.

It was a sombre occasion at parkrun at Golden Harvest Park where runners wore red to show support for one of their lead volunteers on December 3.

Kim MacCallum was in a coma at the time of the run – a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.

The next day, she passed away.

Kim MacCallum will always be remembered for her supportive and optimistic personality.

Red was MacCallum’s favourite colour and it was in that colour that Matthew Burrows was the first to cross the line, pointing a finger skyward and telling all it was “for Kim”.

MacCallum was an event ambassador not just for the parkrun at Golden Harvest Park but also at parkruns in Ruimsig, Fourways and Lanseria.

Most runners at Golden Harvest Park knew her well and offered support to her family including Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau who said a few words before the run to thank everyone for coming.

Most runners also tried to be positive and celebrate the optimistic and encouraging personality that MacCallum was.

“Kim was an amazing woman, it was through her inspiration and determination that Golden Harvest Park parkrun was started,” said event director Jan Clark.

“It was where I first met Kim, with her sunny disposition and ‘I can do anything’ attitude, she lead from the front. She was loved and adored by so many. It was a privilege to know her, she was a special gift and she has changed so many lives for the better just because you knew her. May her legacy live on.”

Clark said MacCallum would never be forgotten.

Upon MacCallum’s passing Bittkau said, “It is with our greatest sadness to let you know that we have to say goodbye to Kim, amazing mother to Morgan, beloved daughter, sister and friend. We are heartbroken to share that this is as a result of her injuries but know that she will be at peace and will always be loved by all.”
