Thieves convicted at the same court where they stole

Acting Randburg Police Station Commander Colonel Solomon Mudau applauds his team after the successful arrest and conviction of two criminals.

Two men who were apprehended after fleeing with stolen goods receive their sentence, ironically at the same court where the crime occurred.

According to the spokesperson of the Randburg Police Station, Captain Makgowanyana Maja, Keabetswe Maswabi and Gudani Walter Tshavhuyo, broke into a vehicle stationed at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. The criminals fled the scene with stolen goods using a getaway car.

Visible police officers who were on patrol detained the criminals after a lengthy car chase which endangered the lives of both the pedestrians and drivers. Once apprehended, officers recovered the victim’s stolen items followed by the tools which were used to break into the car.

Keabetswe Maswabi was sentenced as follows:

Charge number 1: Theft out of a motor vehicle: five years imprisonment.
Charge number 2: Possession of car-breaking implements: three years imprisonment
Charge number 3: Reckless driving: fined R 10 000 or twelve months imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of contravening the provisions of the National Road Traffic acts.

Gudani Walter Tshavhuyo was sentenced as follows:

Count 1: Malicious damage to property: three years imprisonment.
Count 2: Possession of car-breaking implements: three years imprisonment.
Count 3: Possession of stolen property: three years imprisonment.
