Reinstatements in Ward 102 slow in coming

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter has taken up the reinstatement issue with the City Council and Ombudsman.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said his office has received an increased number of complaints related to outstanding reinstatements in his ward.

In a letter to the Randburg Sun, Potter wrote that the public is still waiting for a number of road and pavement repairs following water pipe bursts.

“Joburg Water digs the pavement and/or road to repair a burst water pipe and seldom returns with speed, or at all, to reinstate the tar, paving or curbing,” he said.

“As ward councillors our role is to provide oversight and escalate to the city. Many ward councillors do this day in, and day out. The issue of reinstatements taking an age to repair is not new and is extremely frustrating and poses serious risk to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.”

To address the issue, his office has done the following:

  • Ongoing engagement with the management of Joburg Water and Joburg Roads Agency
  • Escalation to the office of the executive mayor
  • Written correspondence to the new CEO of the Joburg Roads Agency
  • Formal complaint to the City of Joburg Ombudsman (specifically regarding the reinstatements in the suburb of Bordeaux south)
  • Ongoing written questions to the City of Joburg council
  • Ongoing engagement at the Transport Section 79 oversight committee.

“As ward councillors, we will continue to champion reinstatements across our wards and city,” Potter concluded.

Joburg Water spokesperson Puleng Mopeli said Potter was correct in his letter, there is a backlog of reinstatements but they are being attended to.

Questions were also sent to Joburg Roads Agency spokesperson, Kelebogile Mafa.

This is a developing story and Mafa’s comments will be published as soon as they are made.
